I think when we decide we know exactly how things are is when pride comes into the picture. And that will trip us up, whether in relationships with others, what we understand to be true, or how we go about life. Like what if we get so worked up that we think we’ve interpreted the Bible correctly?
First, we may not be right, and we may be missing out on new discovery coming from reading and meditating on the Bible. We wouldn’t if we thought we already knew the answer. Second, we could lose out on relationships. When we shut other people down cause we think we’re right and we tell them they’re wrong, we cut off a branch of communication. We turn our relationships into arguements instead of discussions. Also, since it is a matter of pride… we could kind of … get it wrong. Then we’d be misinterpreting God. We do not know for sure about life.
Human words are of this world. God is not. He is more, therefore we cannot fully understand Him and His ways by reading the Bible. We can partially (see 1st Corinthians 13). Also, through science, we can partially understand God. We know God is an ordered and creative God, we understand that by observing the beauty and symmetry of creation. We see His intelligence in the design of water and it’s properties that keep our earth stable.
We see His design in “evolution” Evolution is scientists way to classify and organize organisms. It’s used to group species based upon molecular similarities (thats the similarites in DNA) They say it’s based on common ancestors. Do they know that? No. It’s a guess. But the similarities in DNA relationing organisms into taxon is an accurate method based on our observations today. So we should use that in order to group our organisms.
Why debate where it came from? For all we know God participated in macroevolution. Or maybe not. Maybe the earth was created in 6 literal days, and maybe it took billions of years. The point is we do not know, and never will, as we cannot make an observation. We can guess. We can make a good guess based upon carbon dating and fossil records. But lets pose a question. How will knowing how old the earth is change the way you live your life today? Will you be a better person because the earth is 100 billions years old and not 10,000, or will you just be right? Science cannot say God was not there for sure because humans were not present in the beginning of time to observe creation. We can make laws and theories based on observations. They help us to understnad the structure and order of the universe.
Therefore we should be concerned with what God intended us to be concerned with, and that is relationships. Relationships with each other, relationships with Him, and relationships with the earth.
What would happen if scientists and Christians came together with their knowledge instead of debating the unknowns that cannot be accurately determined? what field of study, what knowledge, what new ideas, would emerge based upon our observations we can see, and God’s idea of order?
Spontaneous Generation used to be the norm. Now it’s laughable. What are we beleiving today that could be incorrect? Lets think about it, and explore new ideas. We learn new things by exploring the things unknown, and opening our mind to possibilities.
